Our Sustainability & Community Impact
Sustainability is not a department or an initiative at Komodo Agrotourism; it is the very foundation of our existence. Our business model is built on the belief that tourism must be a force for good, creating positive, lasting impacts for the environment and the communities we visit. We are committed to a regenerative approach—leaving the natural and cultural landscapes of Flores better than we found them. This page details our specific, measurable commitments to environmental stewardship and community empowerment.
Environmental Stewardship
We recognize that all travel has an environmental footprint. Our goal is to minimize this footprint through conscious planning and innovative partnerships.
- Carbon Responsibility Program: We meticulously track the carbon emissions from all our ground and sea transport. We partner with the Indonesian-based organization Jejak.in to invest in certified carbon offset projects, focusing on mangrove reforestation and conservation programs right here in the coastal areas of Flores. This allows us to contribute directly to the resilience of the local ecosystem.
- War on Plastics: We have a strict zero single-use plastic bottle policy on all our tours. Guests are provided with high-quality, reusable water bottles at the start of their journey, with safe, filtered water available for refills. We work actively with our farm-stay partners to help them reduce their reliance on single-use plastics in their kitchens and operations.
- Water Conservation: Flores is a region with distinct wet and dry seasons, making water a precious resource. We educate our guests on mindful water consumption and partner with homestays that have implemented rainwater harvesting and water-saving measures.
- Supporting Conservation: A portion of our revenue is donated directly to our conservation partners, including the Komodo Survival Program and The Nature Conservancy Indonesia, to support their vital work in protecting the terrestrial and marine biodiversity of the region.
Community Empowerment & Economic Linkage
Our vision of sustainability is deeply human-centric. We believe that for tourism to be sustainable, it must create tangible, long-term benefits for local people. Our entire agrotourism model is designed around this principle.
- Hyper-Local Employment: We are committed to maximizing local employment. Over 90% of our on-the-ground team—including guides, drivers, and operations staff—are hired from the local Manggarai communities. We invest in their training and professional development, creating careers, not just jobs.
- Fair Wage & Direct Trade Guarantee: All our employees and direct partners are paid a wage that significantly exceeds the regional minimum wage (Upah Minimum Provinsi – UMP). For our artisan partners, such as the weavers in Todo village, we operate on a direct trade model, ensuring they receive 100% of the asking price for their craft.
- The Komodo Agrotourism Community Fund: We allocate 2% of the net profit from every tour package into a dedicated Community Fund. This fund is managed transparently in partnership with village leaders to support local needs, such as purchasing books for the school in Wae Rebo, improving sanitation facilities in our partner farm-stays, or funding training for young farmers.
- Preserving Intangible Heritage: We see ourselves as custodians of culture. We provide direct financial support to master weavers and cultural practitioners to run workshops for the younger generation, ensuring that ancient skills like ‘tenun songke’ and the philosophy of the ‘Caci’ dance are passed down and remain a vibrant part of Manggarai life. Our methodology for selecting partners is detailed on our Our Methodology page.
When you travel with us, you are not just a tourist; you are an active participant in a sustainable ecosystem. You are investing in the future of Flores, empowering its people, and helping to preserve its irreplaceable culture and environment.

Imagine the vibrant hues of a healthy coral reef teeming with life, or the rich aroma of freshly harvested spices from a local farm. This is the promise of responsible travel, and at Komodo Agrotourism, we believe that experiencing the breathtaking natural beauty and cultural richness of Flores and the Komodo archipelago should always come with a profound commitment to its preservation and prosperity.
Environmental stewardship, beyond carbon
While our Carbon Responsibility Program meticulously addresses our footprint, our dedication to environmental stewardship extends across every facet of our operations. We implement rigorous water conservation strategies, from rainwater harvesting at our land-based facilities to advanced greywater recycling systems on our luxury phinisi vessels. This ensures minimal draw on precious local freshwater resources and prevents marine pollution. Furthermore, our commitment to a plastic-free environment means eliminating single-use plastics across all tours and properties, instead utilizing reusable alternatives and partnering with local initiatives for responsible waste management, including composting organic waste from our kitchens.
Protecting the unparalleled biodiversity of this region is paramount. Our guides undergo continuous training in low-impact tourism practices, ensuring respectful wildlife observation that minimizes disturbance to species like the Komodo dragon and the diverse marine life in the UNESCO-listed Komodo National Park. We strictly adhere to “leave no trace” principles on all excursions, from pristine beaches to volcanic hiking trails. Our procurement policies prioritize locally and ethically sourced materials, from sustainable timber for our accommodations to organic produce from the very farms we support through our agrotourism model, reducing transportation emissions and supporting ecological farming practices.
Empowering local communities
The “agrotourism” in Komodo Agrotourism signifies a deep-rooted commitment to the people and traditions of Flores. We believe that true luxury travel creates tangible, positive economic impacts for the local communities that host us. Over 80% of our dedicated staff, from expert local guides and skilled boat crews to our talented culinary teams, are proud residents of Flores and the surrounding islands. This commitment ensures fair wages, stable employment, and opportunities for professional growth within the region, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the tourism experience.
Beyond employment, we actively invest in community development. Our partnerships with local farmers go beyond purchasing produce; we provide training in sustainable farming techniques, help improve market access, and ensure fair prices for their crops, directly contributing to the economic resilience of rural families. We also support local artisans by featuring their handcrafted goods in our accommodations and offering them as unique souvenirs, preserving traditional crafts. Furthermore, Komodo Agrotourism contributes to educational initiatives, funding scholarships for local children and supporting vocational training programs that equip young people with the skills needed for careers in hospitality and conservation, building a brighter future for generations to come. Regenerative practices in action
Our regenerative approach is not merely a philosophy; it is woven into the fabric of every Komodo Agrotourism experience. This means designing tours that are inherently small-group and intimate, allowing for deeper engagement with the environment and local culture while minimizing ecological impact. Our itineraries are carefully curated to avoid overcrowding sensitive sites, ensuring that each visit leaves the natural environment undisturbed and allows for genuine cultural exchange. On land, we actively participate in reforestation efforts, collaborating with local community forestry groups to plant over 5,000 native trees annually, helping to restore degraded landscapes and enhance biodiversity outside of protected areas.
The agrotourism model itself is a powerful regenerative tool. By directly engaging with and supporting local, sustainable agriculture, Komodo Agrotourism helps to maintain diverse crop ecosystems, improve soil health, and reduce reliance on monoculture farming, which can deplete natural resources. This holistic approach ensures that the stunning landscapes of Flores, from its fertile valleys to its pristine coastlines, are not just preserved but actively enhanced by our presence. For our guests, this translates into a luxury experience that transcends mere comfort, offering the profound satisfaction of knowing their journey contributes to a thriving ecosystem and empowered communities, leaving a legacy of positive impact long after they return home.
